My Notes - Piff the Diary (Credits: Shaping Maths 5B TB)
Dear Piff,
I have learnt average for Maths today. It is very interesting! My teacher explained to us very clearly so I understand everything she is trying to say. Now, I should explain to you! Please look at the following! :D
To find the average of a set of data,
Step 1 - Find the sum of all the data
Step 2 - Divide the sum by the number of data.
Is it clear enough? Never mind. I will proceed and give examples. Later on, Piff and others, you can try doing some exercises! If you want the answers or you do not know how to do, send an email to 3794maths@gmail.com
Let's try the examples.
Find the average of 1, 5, 0 and 6.
Firstly, we add all the numbers.
So, 1+5+0+6= 12 << That is what I did !!
then, divide by 4.
4 comes from the four different numbers including 0.
so 12 divide by 4.
Equals to 3.
So the average is 3!
Let's try some exercises.
1. What is the average of 9, 11 and 13?
2. What is the average of 29kg, 28kg, 30kg and 33kg?
3. What is the average of 16, 18, 19, 15 and 17?
4. What is the average of 28, 32, 24 and 28?
5. What is the average of $130, $125 and $105?
6. What is the average of 1.62kg, 2.3kg, 0.96kg and 2.48kg?
7. Meiling spent $57 on 3 gifts. Find the average cost of the gifts.
8. Fei Fei spent a total of $25.60 in 6 days. What was the average amount of money she spent each day?
9. Caili bought 13 pairs of shoes for an old-age home. The average cost of each pair of shoes was $19.15. How much did Caili spend on the shoes altogether?
10. To win an English essay prize, Jean must score an average of 80 marks or above for 3 essays. Jean scores 82 marks and 75 marks for the first two essays. What is the lowest score she needs for the third essay in order to win a prize?
11. The average cost of 2 story books was $13.50. One of the story books cost 4 times as much as the other story book. Find the cost of each story book.
12. The average of 3 different even numbers is 8. All the numbers are greater than zero. One of the numbers is 8. What could the other two numbers be? (Many possible answers)
13. Lynn and Caili went shopping. Lynn spent $5 more than Caili. On the average, each girl spent $7. How much did Caili spent?
14. On the average, David cycled5km in 3 days. He cycled 3km further on the second day than the first day, and another 3km further on the third day than the second day. How far did he cycle on the first day?
15.Paul runs an average of 4.275km each day. What is the total distance that he will run in a week?
16. The average mass of 7 passengers in a lift is 62.35kg. After one of the passengers with a mass of 56kg leaves the lift, waht would the average mass of the remaining passengers be? Give your answer correct to 2 decimal places.
